Alexandria, VA, April 8, 2026 – While aggregate employment in IT remained effectively flat in March 2026, adding a mere 209 jobs month-over-month, demand is clearly building, according to TechServe Alliance, the national trade association for the IT & Engineering Staffing and Solutions Industry. On a year-over-year basis, IT employment grew 0.87%, or 45,695 jobs. Engineering employment declined 0.15% in March and was down 0.88% compared to the same period last year, with a net loss of 24,967 jobs.

“March’s IT employment index data tells one story — effectively flat month-over-month, but that’s a lagging indicator. What we are hearing directly from our firms during our April Executive Roundtables is meaningfully different: client demand for critical technology talent is picking up, the mix of job orders is shifting toward higher-priority, higher-quality requirements,” said Mark Roberts, CEO of TechServe Alliance.
“What’s striking about this moment is that the headwinds and the opportunities are arriving simultaneously. Firms that continued to invest in their sales and delivery capabilities, are deploying AI with discipline, verifying candidate quality, and building deeper client relationships are creating structural advantages that continue to compound. This is no longer a ‘wait and see’ market,” observed Roberts.
